SUMMARY
Awaken the inner Dakar racer that lives in your heart! This adventurous 8 day tour takes you from the breezy coast of Cape Town to the vast desert of northern South Africa and the Orange River region. Along South Africa's lesser explored west coast, we'll ride until reaching the beautiful Orange river, on the border of Namibia.

This tour is for riders keen for adventure! You are unlikely to encounter traffic or shiny sports cars on this trip. You will however be treated to a remote and beautiful landscape. This is a tough ride for experienced motorcycle riders with at least some sand riding experience. We travel light with a support vehicle joining us at the end of each day and on the route, where possible. Although lodgings are limited due to the remote areas we ride, you’ll be surprised by their hospitality and comforts. Even a night tenting on a remote beach will enhance the overall experience.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Leave Cape Town
We head north, leaving the slopes of Table Mountain behind us, with an easy morning ride to settle on the bike, before reaching the coast at Elands Bay. We follow the coastal track ending the day in the picturesque fishing village of Lamberts Bay.
Day 2: Namaqua National Park
Deep sandy tracks await us in the Namaqua National Park, framed by lush fynbos and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. After lunch we turn east over the coastal hills to a superb luxury tented bush camp. An unforgettable but tough day’s riding.
Day 3: Richtersveld National Park
Another day of stunning adventure riding, over Wilderpedhoek Pass as we head into the Richtersveld National Park via Eksteensfontein on the sandy rocky tracks of the Western Namaqua 4×4 route. On tracks labelled “not recommended’ on the map our route take us through the mountains down to the Orange River (Gariep) to Vioolsdrift.
Day 4: Orange River Float
After a leisurely breakfast we take an inflatable canoe down the Orange River, a green strip that bisects this arid land, South Africa to the south, Namibia to the north. Later we rejoin our bikes for a short ride to our secret tented camp and a barbecue under the star filled sky.
Day 5: Land of the Nama
More postcard vistas as the semi-desert 4×4 trail roughly follows the river through the lands of the scattered Nama people to our guesthouse at Pella.
Day 6: Verneukpan
Free riding as we speed up on wide gravel roads through vast plains with outcroppings of haphazard rock piles to Verneukpan, made famous by Sir Malcolm Campbell’s land speed record attempt in 1929. The name means ‘to trick’ and the 57km x 11km fresh water pan is so flat and sparse it certainly tests the mind.
Day 7: Tankwa Karoo National Park
Big sky riding across rocky desert plains until the day ends with a breathtaking descent down Ganaga Pass onto the renosterveld plains of the Tankwa Karoo National Park. Your final night is one you’re likely to cherish for a long while, at a desert saloon in a remote wilderness, hours from the nearest town.
Day 8: Return to Cape Town
The Tankwa Karoo although seemingly an arid dry waistland is one 25 exclusive plant diversity hotspots of the world that bursts into a colour explosion of wild flowers in spring. We traverse the park, quench our thirsts at the remote Tanka Karoo Farm Stall before crossing the Droelands Pass into the town of Ceres. Then it’s onto Bainskloof Pass, a road surely built with motorcycles in mind and on cresting presents us with panoramic views of Cape Town and the Cape Winelands. Just a short cruise down and sadly our journey is over.
